FPL Energy, partners to study wind energy

FPL wind Energy said it is partnering with Texas Christian University and Oxford University on a research initiative to study the ecological and socio-economic impacts of wind power development.

The research is to be coordinated by TCU¡¯s Institute for Environmental Studies in Fort Worth, Texas, and the U.K.-based Oxford University¡¯s Environmental Change Institute, known for its analysis of lower carbon futures and climate change.

The five-year research effort is to be funded by FPL Energy, a subsidiary of Juno Beach-based FPL Group (NYSE: FPL), one of the nation¡¯s largest wind and solar energy producers. It is estimated to cost more than $2 million.

All of the field research necessary for the project will be conducted at FPL Energy¡¯s wind farms. It will start in Texas, then spread to other locations across the country.

The research initiative will focus on three primary areas, including wind turbine impact on birds and bats, wind turbine ecological impacts, and socioeconomic impacts of wind projects.

FPL Group shares closed up 6 cents to $60.87. The 52-week high was $73.75 on Jan. 7. The 52-week low was $54.61 on July 11.
