The Altran Foundation for Innovation has announced that Trevor Baylis OBE is to launch the worldwide Altran Innovation competition that will win its inventor EUR1million of consulting to help bring the invention to life.
The competition, to be officially launched 8 November 2001, has the theme 'Technological Innovations for Developing Countries', something Trevor Baylis OBE holds dear to his heart.
In 1991, inspired by a programme about the spread of AIDS, Trevor developed the Wind Up Radio and following funding, in 1994 he established BayGen Power Industries in Cape Town employing disabled workers to manufacture the Freeplay Wind Up Radio.
The invention has featured on award-winnning BBC programme QED and in 1996 was awarded the BBC Design Award for Best Product and Best Design.
In 1997, the new generation Freeplay radio rolled off the production line in South Africa and has now been updated to include a solar panel and will run without assistance whilst the sun shines.
Said Trevor, "Helping developing countries is very important to me and companies like Altran are pioneers with competitions such as this. Through experience I know a very simple 'brainwave' can impact on so many people's lives that it's almost immeasurable. The UK has some wonderful, inventive people and it's companies like Altran that help harness that creativity and bring an invention to life. This is an incredibly exciting competition."
Open to designers and inventors in the 14 countries where Altran has a presence, including the UK, the winner will receive consulting worth EUR1million from Altran consultants who are specialists in the chosen field, to help the project get off the ground.
Added Mark Cowan, marketing manager at Altran, "We're overjoyed to have Trevor Baylis OBE launching the competition. This is a man who had the idea and saw it to completion making him truly respected in his field."
Entry forms can be obtained from The Altran Foundation website - www.altran-foundation.org and also by fax 0033 144 095440. The deadline to submit entry forms is 31 January 2002 and the winners will be announced at the prize giving ceremony in June 2002.
