Experts says installation of windmills generator and coal plants for power generation is the only immediate solution to cope with the energy crisis in Pakistan. They suggest the people should conserve electricity while the government should utilise the available resources at maximum level for power generation.
Talking about the issue, a scientist of Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research said the power crisis could be handled just in a short span of time by maintaining the existing hydel power projects and regulating them on full capacity.
He said the real problem was unwillingness of the rulers who did not want to pull the country out of power shortage as they were working on an agenda to make the country a consumer society by destroying the local industry.
The PCSIR scientist was of the view that we should make short, medium and long-term plans to get rid of the energy crisis permanently. “In order to minimise the current electricity shortfall, the government should ensure uninterrupted supply of fuel to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and maintain hydel power projects”, he said.
For the medium-term plan, the government should launch awareness programmes to sensitise the electricity user to conserve the energy, he said. The scientist said almost all home appliances being used in the country were substandard which consume 25 to 30 per cent more electricity.
While talking about the long-term plan, he said, they should look towards alternate energy production - nuclear, windmill power , coal and solar energy. What to talk about new plans and construction of dams and coal power projects and wind power generators , when the rulers were reluctant to enhance the existing projects, he remarked.
Some six thermal plants are lying useless in Karachi for one year or more which has to be installed at Cheechoki Malyan and other stations. The issue is hanging in balance on account of ‘commission settlement”, he added.
The scientist suggested the government to install wind turbines projects in coastal areas of Balochistan and solar plants for the elite who owned the houses of two kanals or more. “Bio energy would also be very cheaper and waste could be used as energy in cement factories”, he added. Pakistan Engineering Congress President Husnain Ahmad said private investors should come forward and invest in power sector to cope with the issue.from:nation.com.pk
